Good design often bypasses carpark buildings for more important appointments – but not in this case.
We announced earlier this year our contribution to an exciting new project at Wellington Airport. The $70 million carpark was planned to ease parking congestion on surrounding roads, as well as providing a key piece of infrastructure for the growing city.
Because the building sits directly opposite the main terminal the carpark needed an attractive, welcoming facade. Urban Group was engaged early on in the design process to provide ideas and costings for this unique project. We offered a complete engineering, fabrication and installation package for a perforated aluminium facade
The size and style of the project is noteworthy. The powder-coated aluminium screen measures a colossal 6000m². Carparks aren’t usually associated with aesthetic flair but, thanks the texture and movement of the design, the gateway to New Zealand’s capital will be both attractive and efficient.
The look was revealed to the public earlier this year and construction on the eight-level carpark building is now well underway.
Set for completion in April 2018, eight-storey building will feature charging stations for electric cars, more short-term parking spots for people making dropoffs, and new facilities for cyclists.
These are exciting times for visitors to Wellington!
